Julie Highlen, Northwoods Art Studio, Landscape Artist
I am an Upper Peninsula Artist, celebrating Lake Superior Shores and its neighboring landscapes and waterways on canvas. I cherish the landscapes of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the North Shore of Minnesota and love sharing them with others. Living near Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and many other scenic and wild areas, I have endless opportunities for inspiration.
My paintings tend to be contemplative. Whether depicting a lone tree, a calm lake or Lake Superior in full action, a single boulder in the water with cedars miraculously growing out of it or a massive wall of sandstone, I want the viewer to take in not just the beauty of nature, but the strength and resilience of it as well. Lake Superior and this rugged, north country, along with its weather, have many moods and I hope to capture them in my paintings. To that end, I am constantly thinking about painting prospects any time I am outdoors and enjoy gaining different perspectives from hiking, canoeing, kayaking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
Most of my paintings are created with acrylics, using personal photo references from my many outdoor adventures.
