Mini Originals

Mini Originals

I paint about 100 minis each year - each celebrating Lake Superior or its neighboring woodlands, birds or animals of the region.  While my stock changes, I can also paint a scene upon request.  These mounted birch panels come ready to hang or set on a bookshelf or window sill.  They vary in sizes from 3x3 up to 4x8.

The majority of my plein air works are from Grand Marais, the Boundary Waters in Minnesota; others are from Marquette and the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Isle Royale Collection

Isle Royale Collection

I recently had a self-appointed artist-in-residency on Isle Royale accompanied by my husband.  This was made possible with the support of a grant that funded part of the expenses.  It was sensory overload.  I started out painting close to the cabin we stayed at as the weather for the day was off and on rain.  Painted trees, wild flowers and trails lined with thimbleberries.  We then headed out in the canoe when the skies were clear and my first exercsion was to climb up on top of a cliff in order to paint Rock Harbor Lighthouse.  Apparently moose enjoy that vantage point as I was setting up my easel, I had to watch out for a pile of "evidence".  It was an awesome morning to paint from there.  I could even pick wild blueberries during the painting session.  After that, we paddled to Edisen Fisheries, another historical site that is on my list to paint and decided to get references for painting this later as we intended to paddle the entire Rock Harbor to the end of Moskey Basin.  We headed to the Moose Research Center next and had an enjoyable conversation with Rolf and Carolyn Peterson while viewing a phenomenal amount of moose skulls and antlers.  Again, due to the time, I took reference photos due to time contraints that were getting tighter as we had not expected to see anyone at the moose center. We made it to Moskey Basin in time to see that all the shelters were taken and I could not get to the "coveted" shelter to take a reference photo but I got a nice shot of our canoe with Rock Harbor in the background.  The next day declared itself to be a paddling day so we explored Tobin Harbor, over to Scolville Point and on up to Merritt Lane.  We stopped at the shelter there so I could paint the scene across from it.  While I was painting, along came a couple in a canoe who planned on staying there for the night and we told them that I was only painting and would be on our way once finished.  I had taken photos of the shelter earlier so I decided not to interfere with their time longer than necessary.  This, too, became an all-day paddle.    We did a day hike with the intention of going to an overlook but I did not make it to Mr. Franklin with John as I came upon a marsh and I immediately set up the easel and went to work.  The rest of the 12 days were filled with paddling, hiking, painting, reference collecting and more painting.I finished 20 miniature paintings that will be available in the near future.  The prices will range from $40 - $75, depending on size.

Boundary Waters

Boundary Waters

John and I have been exploring the Boundary Waters annually for several years.  Before that, we did semi-annual trips with our daughters since they sat side by side in the middle of the canoe.  We've had quite a few adventures including sightings of northern lights, full moons reflecting on the water, wolf, moose, eagle, beaver, swan, porcupine, deer, bear, and my favorite, the otter.  We only fished a couple of times and our youngest daughter was the successful one.

While I keep a variety of prints available, some may not be in stock.  It could take a couple of weeks once ordered to receive a print.  Some prints can be ordered as a Giclee (print on canvas).
